Telkom – Verizon woes continue
Telkom users accessing the Verizon Business network continued to experience ‘a severe degradation of service’ on Monday, a problem which started two weeks ago.
According to a Hetzner network notice, Verizon/SAIX peering issues continue to cause high latency and packet loss with websites and emails on servers hosted in Cape Town.
According to the network notice: ‘Telkom engineers are working on the problem.’
The peering issues between Verizon and SAIX appear to have continued unabated since the problem began two weeks ago.
According to Hetzner a peering link upgrade was performed over the weekend, but the additional bandwidth has filled up completely resulting in the need for another upgrade to alleviate current problems.
Further information suggests that Verizon is currently waiting for Telkom to indicate when this additional upgrade will be performed.
Telkom and Verizon mum
Despite the frustration caused to its subscribers, Telkom remains mum on the issue.
Verizon initially indicated that a lack of infrastructure on the Telkom side of the peering infrastructure is the cause of the problem, but the company did not want to give any feedback on the continued problems dogging their network.
The silence from both Telkom and Verizon Business is not a good sign for consumers, and according to one industry player using the Verizon Business network the company is already making plans to migrate its services to another network.
The continued problems on the Cape Town – Johannesburg Verizon Business link may also affect the hosting business in Cape Town as clients start to consider moving to a Johannesburg based data center.
