Windows 7 out in 18 months
Multi-touch technology is high on Microsoft’s agenda for the release of Windows 7, Bill Gates has confirmed. Windows 7 is expected to be released within the next 18 months.
Top of the list for Windows 7 is a planned multi-touch interface based on the work of Microsoft’s Surface team. Using a multi-touch interface users will be able to do things such as zoom in on pictures using two fingers, pan across them or even flip them over.
Gates and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off some of the planned features of Windows 7 yesterday at the All Things Digital show.
Also based on the multi-touch technology, Gates demonstrated a touch-based paint application that allows users to use all ten fingers to paint on the screen.
For more traditional inputs, Windows 7 is planned to ship with a dock that resembles the Mac OSX application dock more than it does Microsoft’s traditional bottom panel.
Windows 7 is also expected to include more a more detailed, touch-sensitive mapping application based on Microsoft Virtual Earth and Microsoft Live Maps.
