TV enabled PC, Laptop and Cellphone users must have license
Anton Heunis, Head of the Audience Services Division at the SABC, said that any device which is capable of receiving a broadcast television signal requires a TV license.
Heunis said that PCs and laptops with TV cards as well as new cellular phones with DVBH or similar technologies will need a licence.
The SABC pointed out that only one valid TV licence is required per household which means that, as long as the household consists of a single family, multiple TV enabled appliances are covered by the single licence.
In the event of a few friends – each owning a TV enabled device – sharing a house, each of the individuals are however required to purchase their own TV licence.
Heunis said that many PC retail outlets already ask for a valid TV licence before selling a laptop or PC with a TV card to a client, and that the SABC is in discussion with cellular players to possibly introduce a similar system.
