Skaap drops call
South African voice over IP service provider Skaap is no longer providing its cheap phone call service. The Cape Town-based company’s website has been down since late last year and representatives today confirmed that it "no longer exists".
The company provided a service for making telephone calls at a vastly-reduced rate.
When MyBroadband contacted the company today a company representative initially said that Skaap no longer existed and confirmed that it was not offering any services to clients.
Later, however, she said that the company was "working on new things". She said that these were "related" to Skaap.
Skaap representative, Keri Davies, declined to comment on these new developments. She also said that she did not want to discuss the reasons for Skaap’s closure with the media "at this point".
The quiet demise of Skaap is in stark contrast with its aggressive marketing during its short lifespan. In an August 2007 press release, shortly before being closed down, the company said: "innovation and service … in the face of the monopolistic behemoths. Anyone fancy a rather vocal sheep as a consumer champion? Watch out Babe: Skaap is on the warpath."
Within months the company quietly closed up shop.
