DSTV XtraView details

MultiChoice recently launched its XtraView service, an enhanced version of dual view providing a more cost effective and flexible viewing option in the home.

The new service allows the use of two separate decoders on a single subscription for a R55 access fee. The two decoders can be used totally independently and provides for full interactive services in both areas where the service is used.

To make the service work users will require two fully functional decoders where the second decoder requires a “heartbeat” coming from the primary decoder to function.

The decoders are linked using normal RF cable through which the heartbeat is sent and video can be shared.  If the heartbeat is interrupted, the second decoder stops working until the heartbeat is re-established.

The system requires newer decoder versions to function – 1110 or later – and unfortunately older decoder models (Pre-1110 and PVR) and not capable of supporting the service.

MultiChoice pointed out that XtraView installation options vary tremendously and depend on the current installation as well as the location of the decoders.

“For this reason it is very difficult to say what the installation will entail. But if you have a single LNB (only one cable coming down from the dish) you will need to upgrade to a twin LNB,” the company said.
