Vox ADSL phone popular
According to Vox Telecom its Vox ADSL phone is South Africa’s leading voice over IP (VoIP) telephone aimed at home and small business users.
“Many people imagine VoIP telephony to be the same as making Internet calls via their computer, but there is a huge difference in quality,” says Vox Telecom CEO Douglas Reed.
“Online calls may be free, but they are carried over public networks and there is very often a loss of quality, as most users know. Voice over IP uses the same technology of converting voice into data, but the calls are carried over our private network so the quality is far superior.”
VoIP services typically promise significant savings when compared with traditional voice services from Telkom or the cellular providers.
According to Reed, Vox offer their subscribers great savings on outbound calls and further give their customers cash back for calls made to them from landlines or cellphones. “On top of that, Vox to Vox calls are free,” said Reed.
“Homes and small businesses have the opportunity to save up to 50% a month on their call costs, but that could go even higher if they are receiving inbound calls on their Vox numbers and making a lot of international calls,” the company said.
Vox Telecom is, however, not the only company that is offering clients a VoIP service with an all-in-one device.
iBurst recently launched its iCall service, promising subscribers that they could drastically reduce their phone bills by using this service.
At R 50 a month, iCall subscribers get R50 worth of free calls, free calls to other iCall subscribers and an iBurst telephone number to receive calls.
MWeb’s MTalk Webcall offers basically the same as iBurst iCall and the Vox ADSL phone, but it also makes it possible for subscribers to make calls using either a softphone or standard phone combined with a VoIP-enabled router.
With a growing number of VoIP services – from softphone services such as Skype and more comprehensive offerings like Vox ADSL phone, iCall and MTalk Webcall – traditional voice revenues are set to dwindle.
Neotel has already introduced more aggressive voice rates (compared with Telkom’s prices) with their NeoConnect offerings, and it is also not surprising to see players like Vodacom, MTN and Cell C bringing more innovative voice pricing models to the market.
With a wide range of interconnect agreements already in place one can expect more competition and lower rates in future.
