Network problems

Problems on the Telkom-SAIX network caused frustration for many Internet users on Wednesday.  The problems started shortly after 14:00 and was still partly unresolved by the time of publication (17:00).

SAIX-Verizon peering problems

According to Hetzner peering problems between Verizon Business and SAIX were causing high latency and packet loss on services hosted on the Johannesburg Verizon Business network.  A Hetzner network notice indicated that all Johannesburg traffic was being routed via Cape Town.

The Verizon and SAIX engineers were attending to the problem, but no time frame for resolving this problem was available by the time of publication.

Telkom confirmed that a fibre cable break, caused by contractors doing work for another entity, is to blame for the network disruption.

Vodacom problems

According to reports from some Vodacom HSDPA subscribers they were also experiencing problems accessing some websites and online services. Some users have also reported problems connecting to the Vodacom 3G/HSDPA service.

"For the past 2 hours we’ve been experiencing a failure of transmission services in some areas of Gauteng, which has had a negative impact predominantly on our data network affecting internet access, and some impact on other voice and data services," said Vodacom’s Dot Field.

"Our transmission network provider, Telkom, has been able to re-route some traffic, however subscribers could still experience a degraded service until the Telkom transmission network is fully restored.”
