Stations seek cheaper boxes

The SABC, M-Net and e.tv have called for cheaper set-top boxes to allow more television owners to receive digital broadcasts.

In its pilot programme, the government’s proposed set-top boxes will cost about R700 each and will include a device allowing people to access public services online.

The state has promised to subsidise these, but e.tv, M-Net and the SABC said yesterday that some viewers might not want the online services and should be allowed to buy cheaper boxes.

The Independent Communications Authority of SA said it would consider their comments.
