Bandwidth for Africa
Intelsat New Dawn is one of a few satellite projects announced in recent months that are aimed at bringing affordable telecoms access to Africa.
In September, Google announced it would back a satellite project to provide internet access to 3 billion people in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The project is a partnership with HSBC and the Liberty Group.
The companies have begun producing 16 low-cost satellites, which will be linked to ground stations, such as cellular towers. The satellite is expected to go live in 2010.
Another satellite that is expected to launch next March is Sumbandila. The satellite, built by SunSpace, will be optimised to take scientific images of South Africa.
