Altech must pay up

HI-TECH firm Altech has been ordered to pay MTN’s and Verizon’s costs in respect of Altech’s intervention application in the MTN/Verizon merger proceedings, after Altech gave up its hard-won right to intervene on the proceedings, the Competition Tribunal said on Friday.

Altech opposed the proposed merger between MTN and Verizon South Africa and applied for leave to intervene.

The company was of the view that the merger would give rise to substantial competition concerns. On Thursday, a day before the hearings were scheduled to begin, the tribunal received notification that Altech was withdrawing its intervention application.
