HD PVR replaces SD PVR
MultiChoice recently announced that it no longer manufactures the SD PVR, and advised customers looking for this service to look at the HD PVR product. This raised questions as to whether Multichoice will be replacing its SD PVR service with its new HD PVR offering.
MultiChoice has confirmed that it has ceased the manufacturing of the SD PVR. "Many of the components used to manufacture the SD PVR have been discontinued; many have reached the end of their life cycle and can no longer be sourced for manufacturing purposes," the DSTV provider said.
The SDPVR will therefore only be available until stocks last. Multichoice has, however, reassured DSTV subscribers who have the SD PVR that they will continue to receive software upgrades and support from MultiChoice, as it is "still very much a part of our product offering".
"After extensive research on global trends and technology, the decision was made to develop and launch a High Definition Ready PVR (HD ready PVR) into the South African market, in August 2008," Multichoice said.
"MultiChoice wanted to give customers the option of viewing the Olympic Games in high definition. In order to meet this very short deadline, the HD PVR at launch had a few known issues. This was acknowledged and communicated to our customers. MultiChoice is in the process of rectifying these issues."
After the launch of the HD PVR in July last year many early adopters complained about bugs with the new system, but Multichoice pointed out that three software downloads have been done since the launch, making the HD PVR far more stable.
Multichoice also said that applications such as SuperSport Active had been added to the service and that there was more to follow.
