Vodacom’s strong data growth
Vodacom recently released its latest set of financial results, showing strong growth in both subscriber numbers and revenue. One of the biggest growth areas for the company was its broadband subscriber numbers.
Over the last year Vodacom grew its local broadband customer base from 400 000 to 720 000, making it the leading broadband provider in South Africa. Vodacom added that they currently have 5 million unique Vodacom internet users on their network, and 1 million subscribers using their free Vodacom email accounts.
Vodacom has seen a 27.9% growth in data revenue, up from R 4.670 billion for the previous financial year to R 5.973 billion this year. There was also a 69.3% increase in connectivity and data usage to R 2.9 billion.
An interesting piece of information shared by Vodacom is that they grew their total data traffic by 97.8% over the last 12 months. The company’s yearly data traffic now totals 3 175 TBytes.
The higher number of 3G handsets, up 78.9% to 2.8 million, bodes well for a market where mobile broadband access is increasing. This is also closely related to the success of the company’s Vodafone Live! portal which now has 2.8 million unique monthly users.
Vodacom’s The Grid, a mobile social network, has attracted 320 000 users who are sending over 2 million messages per month.
Vodacom said at their financial results presentation that they will continue to invest in broadband and they have a strong focus to “lead in broadband and mobile internet”.
