SAT-3 cable fault details
A problem on the SAT-3 cable this week caused large parts of West Africa to struggle with connectivity to the rest of the world. Benin, Togo, Niger and Nigeria all experienced downtime and had to revert to satellite bandwidth to get connected again.
Telkom confirmed that a cable fault approximately 25km off the Benin coast line has been identified as the reason for the problems. “The branch on which the cable fault has been diagnosed impacts all services to and through Benin,” said Telkom.
The company said that the maintenance operations to mobilise the cable ship have been initiated by the relevant Maintenance Authority, which is Benin Telecom in this case.
Good news for local Internet users is that they were unaffected by this fault. “Telkom SA confirms that the rest of the SAT-3 system is unaffected by this fault. It is to be noted that Telkom SA’s customers are also being served by the SAT-3/WASC, SAFE and SAT-2 submarine cables,” Telkom concluded.
