IS calls for WiMax common sense

ICASA confirmed today that they are in the process of terminating Internet Solutions’ (IS) 3.5 GHz WiMax network.

IS developed their WiMax network using a test license from ICASA but a complaint, lodged with the Regulator by MTN Network Solutions (MTN NS), appears to have resulted in ICASA deciding to terminate the network.

MTN NS confirmed that they lodged a complaint with ICASA regarding IS’s WiMax network as they felt that the company was no longer operating within the confines of their license.

MTN NS however said that they did not receive any further correspondence regarding the matter and that they are in the dark as to whether it actually resulted in the termination of IS’s 3.5 GHz WiMax network.

Angus MacRobert, CEO of IS, says that this is a sad state of affairs and that the termination of their test network will impact negatively on the corporate market and telecoms space as a whole.

MacRobert said that continual testing is necessary in the fast changing environment of technology and telecoms, and stated that he believes that their competitor MTN NS is directly linked to this incident.

The IS CEO further squashed speculation that IS was using their test license to provide commercial WiMax services to the corporate market, saying that it is just another attempt by MTN NS to tarnish IS’s reputation.

According to MacRobert, their WiMax trials and future plans with the technology fits perfectly into Government’s managed liberalization initiatives in the local telecommunications environment which make the latest developments so much more perplexing.

The issue is currently under discussion with ICASA and IS hope that the Regulator will rethink their position and allow them to continue their testing.
