Telkom WiMax rollout continues

Telkom announced that it currently has 27 WiMax sites which are fully operational and plans to roll out an additional 71 base stations.

The company is further planning to launch WiMax-based voice services by March 2008.

Telkom is however not the only company that is investing in WiMax.

Vodacom has recently announced that it will launch its WiMax services in early 2008 while Neotel will use WiMax to launch what it calls ‘true broadband services’.

While Neotel will be using WiMax as its primary broadband technology, Telkom is employing WiMax as an ADSL replacement technology in regions where ADSL is not available.

MWEB, Internet Solutions and various other providers also have active WiMax test networks, but they must wait for ICASA to allocate them spectrum before they launch commercial services.
