WiMAX – the business benefits
Spescom Telecommunications CEO, Thomas Makore, says the technology can be utilised in the corporate, SME and home environment.
“Due to the portability of the technology, it is predicted that all laptop computers and PDAs will be WiMAX-enabled by this year,” says Makore.
Makore notes the technology can be quickly deployed and states that this will facilitate competition and new entries into the telecoms market sector, which is good news for consumers across the board.
“In SA and many other developing countries, the reach of copper networks is limited by geographical proximity to urban centres. However, WiMAX technology can be quickly deployed to remote locations and is relatively cheaper,” he adds.
Makore says WiMAX benefits include reduced network costs, when compared to GSM and 3G, enhanced speed and operability at greater distances.
“Generally users can experience DSL level of services without the additional cost. Moreover, due to WiMAX, operators will be able to offer triple-play services such as voice, data and video,” he concludes.
