Vodacom makes HSUPA free

Vodacom has made its High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), which promises upload speeds in excess of 1 Mbps, free to all its mobile broadband subscribers.

Previously only subscribers who paid an additional R 49.00 per month for 3.6 Mbps HSDPA had access to HSUPA.

Vodacom recently revealed that around 2.5% of its current mobile broadband users have subscribed to the R 49.00 service which promises higher download and access speeds.

The fact that rival MTN provides both 3.6 Mbps HSDPA and HSUPA at no additional charge to all its mobile broadband subscribers may have prompted Vodacom to scrap the R 49.00 requirement for HSUPA access.

Recent media reports suggested that both Vodacom and MTN are considering more aggressively priced broadband offerings, but both cellular providers downplayed the reports simply saying that an announcement may be made about pricing in due course.
