15 Mbps Neotel WiMAX peak speeds possible
MyBroadband today reported that Neotel is getting ready to launch an uncapped 2 Mbps WiMAX service aimed at the business market. The company announced that it is about to launch a multi-segment WiMAX service that offers peak speeds of up to 5Mbps.
The company further said that depending on the distance to the base station, the peak rate may be as high as 15Mbps. “This type of bandwidth is unheard of in South Africa’s consumer arena,” says Stefano Mattiello from Neotel Executive. “It completely revolutionises the consumer telecommunications landscape,” he says.
“WiMAX is not a brand new technology – but WiMAX for consumers at these speeds is definitely a first,” says Mattiello. He believes the consumer WiMAX offering will immediately address a market need for high bandwidth.
“It’s almost difficult to comprehend the benefits which this will bring to the consumer market – we’ve heard so much about the content and applications that are available out there, but have not physically experienced them.”
In the past WiMAX has been seen as a predominantly corporate solution, but Mattiello believes that consumers will derive as much, if not more, benefit from the technology. “Consumers want that access to content – quickly, conveniently and reliably – and this is the answer they have been waiting for.”
There are currently three commercial WiMAX services available in South Africa which are aimed at the SME and consumer market: Vodacom/iBurst WiMAX with speeds of up to 1 Mbps, Telkom’s 512 Kbps WiMAX and Screamer Telecoms’ WiMAX service with speeds of up to 1 Mbps.
