Larger ADSL data packages coming from Telkom

Since the launch of ADSL in 2002 Telkom – through its retail arm Telkom Internet – has been offering 3GB data bundles.  ‘3GB caps’ have become synonymous with ADSL in South Africa, but things are starting to change.

Telkom last year upped the size of their 2GB data bundles to 3GB and their 3GB bundles to 5GB, something which the company said had an immediate effect on which bundles consumers purchased.  While most ADSL subscribers previously purchased 1GB data packages because they were cheaper, more consumers are now opting for the 3GB offering which provides better value for money.

Other ADSL Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Web Africa and Axxess have long offered data bundles ranging between 1GB and 100GB, while providers like Vox Telecom are offering clients a service where they can decide the size of their monthly cap.  Telkom says it has taken note of the demand from consumers, and are now designing a new set of services to meet the needs of their subscribers.

Telkom said that they will be launching 10GB, 15GB and 20GB data bundles in the near future.  While no exact launch date has been announced yet, Telkom’s retail division said that this will definitely happen before mid-2010, and possibly sooner.

This is however not the only new ADSL offering which consumers can expect from Telkom.  The company is working on prepaid ADSL offerings, better top-up packages and a new service where users will be able to create their own ADSL cap – hence have the option to change the size of their monthly cap on the fly.

Telkom is keen to launch their services as soon as possible, but according to the retail arm of the company the billing systems and full system integration is a complicated process which needs to be tested thoroughly to ensure a good customer experience.

Exact pricing details for the new services are not available yet, but Telkom said that they are constantly looking at adding value, and that they are well aware that they need to remain competitive in a growing broadband market.
