Afrihost’s R9.50 per GB ADSL packages
In late February this year Afrihost announced that they are running a limited special on their 50 GB and 100 GB monthly data packages. They’ve reduced their existing monthly prices for these packages by 34% and also doubled the data cap until at least the 31st of May.
This special offer meant that the per-GB price for Afrihost’s data bundles dropped to below R10 per GB.
At the time Afrihost CEO Gian Visser said, “We are looking for clients who want to move a ton of traffic and want to do so at the cheapest per GB international bandwidth offered in South Africa. In September last year we stunned the market by dropping our ADSL prices to R29 per GB and this is the next step in the fight to bring ADSL data costs down in South Africa.”
In March MWEB shook up the local ADSL market by launching affordable uncapped ADSL services. This move made many previously viable offerings redundant, which includes numerous large per-GB packages like Afrihost’s 200 GB special for R1900.
Afrihost has hit back, extending its R9.50/GB ‘Power Plans’ to accommodate smaller usage limits, including:
- 40 GB for R380
- 60 GB for R570
- 100 GB for R950
Afrihost is also offering subscribers a 15 GB package for R285 which equates to R19 per GB.
According to the Afrihost website the R9.50 per GB offer will last until 31 August.
Afrihost is not the only ISP to cut its ADSL prices over the last few weeks. Axxess recently launched their R19 per GB ADSL Lite product while Web Africa slashed their ADSL data bundle rates to R199 for 15 GB, R299 for 25 GB and R499 for a 50 GB account.
On the wholesale side Branded Internet cut their per-GB tariffs to reseller ISPs to R8 per GB, well below the current market rates.
