MWEB ADSL international down, again
Over the last few weeks MWEB ADSL subscribers have suffered on a few occasions with poor or non-existent international Internet access – something that is typically associated with a problem with SEACOM access.
Apart from one prolonged downtime on the SEACOM cable the rest of the international bandwidth outages were caused by terrestrial backhaul link failure.
The latest outage came on Friday night. According to an MWEB network notice on Friday night at 18:12 an ‘ADSL outage’ will affect international browsing and email of all their subscribers.
The MWEB helpdesk puts the latest outage down to a problem on the SEACOM undersea cable, and said that SEACOM is investigating the issue.
It however seems that it is not the SEACOM cable itself which is down, but rather the terrestrial backhaul links – supplied by Neotel – which carry SEACOM traffic from the landing station to Johannesburg. All routes seem to be down, and no immediate ETA is available on when the service is expected to be back up.
If it is indeed Neotel which is to blame for the downtime, it will not be the first time that multiple routes on the operator’s network fail simultaneously. The SEACOM downtime a few weeks ago was also caused by a double-route failure on the Neotel network.
