Here is who qualifies for Telkom’s free ADSL-to-FTTH trial

Telkom has launched a fibre-to-the-home trial, where thousands of DSL users across South Africa will be migrated to the broadband technology free of charge.

DSL customers within Telkom’s fibre footprint will be given the opportunity to upgrade their copper-based connectivity to the more advanced fibre network.

During the two-month trial, customers are also able to test Telkom’s Boltspeed 10Mbps and 20Mbps fibre products, for free.

Customers who choose to retain their connectivity on the higher speeds during the fibre trial will be required to renew their contracts with Telkom for a new 24-month contract period, which includes ISP services.

Alternatively, customers can opt to revert to their original DSL speed at the same price point within their original DSL contract period with Telkom. However, the connectivity will still be delivered over fibre.

How voice calls will work

The optical network terminator (ONT) that Telkom installs at the customer’s premises during an FTTH installation is equipped with analogue ports.

The customer’s existing telephone handset will plug into the port using an RJ11 connector.

The voice product that Telkom has designed for its FTTH customers is a high-quality VoIP product that works through the company’s voice platform soft switch.

Customers will retain their existing directory numbers.

Who qualifies for the fibre trial

Telkom said the trial will be offered by Telkom Retail, and is targeted exclusively at Telkom’s DSL customers who already have existing DSL and ISP services with them.

ADSL users who are keen to be part of the trial will have to reside within Telkom’s fibre footprint.

Telkom said it will communicate with all its eligible DSL customers.
