The latest statistics from Internet service providers show that YouTube and BitTorrent consumes the most bandwidth in South Africa among ADSL users.
Cybersmart CEO Laurie Fialkov said that video is by far the biggest traffic driver, followed by file downloads (both BitTorrent and other downloads).
Axxess director Franco Barbalich also said that YouTube consumes the most bandwidth on their network, followed by BitTorrent and HTTP downloads.
While the top bandwidth consumers are hardly surprising, other popular services based on bandwidth consumption are more interesting.
According to Afrihost’s statistics, Facebook’s services consume the fourth most bandwidth, followed by the iTunes App Store, and Netflix.
Other significant bandwidth consumers include Google Play, Windows Updates, and Valve’s services.
The graph below shows the most popular services based on bandwidth consumption on Afrihost’s ADSL network.
These statistics corresponds with information received from other large ISPs, like Axxess and Cybersmart.
It should be noted that the BitTorrent total is a combination of BitTorrent’s UTP, TCP, DHT, and encrypted traffic.
