Cybersmart is well known for their innovative and cost effective ADSL offerings, and they have now increased their range of offerings with the addition of their ‘fixed price’ ADSL services.
These ‘fixed price’ ADSL services are essentially uncapped ADSL offerings that include ADSL access (aka ADSL line rental), but Cybersmart MD Laurie Fialkov explains that he does not want to call it uncapped as there “is no such thing as an uncapped service”.
“To advertise such a thing [uncapped ADSL] officially is going to cause us more problems than it solves. Uncapped products are further very bandwidth intensive, and it is simply not possible to get bandwidth on demand when needed as other ‘uncapped’ ISPs have previously alluded to,” said Fialkov.
Fialkov explains that Cybersmart now has a “fixed price” product where no cap is set for the user. This product is however not available to everyone.
To get access to the new Cybersmart ‘fixed price’ offering the user must have been with Cybersmart for over 6 months, must be referred to the ISP by another ‘fixed price’ subscriber or be a brand new Cybersmart subscriber.
“There is no way a ‘returning user’ who has been with us, jumped ship and now wants to come back because he realizes uncapped is a figment of the imagination is ever going to get this product,” said Failkov.
Fialkov further explained that if a subscriber does not have a data consumption which they deem reasonable using the weighting rules below, they will either throttle the service or discontinue the service depending on how much free bandwidth they have available at the time.
“Bandwidth used between business hours (8-5pm) carries a much higher weighting than bandwidth used between 6pm and midnight and bandwidth used between midnight and 8am has no weighting at all,” explains Fialkov.
Referrals can also be risky: “Users who have received the product on a referral basis have their bandwidth grouped, and if the average of the group is unreasonable we will throttle or discontinue the entire group. This grouping allows a big user to create a group of lighter users who will subsidize his usage”.

Uncapped ADSL vouchers for R99
In a related move Axxess has launched its uncapped prepaid ADSL vouchers which are available from Pick n Pay and Engen Quickshop nationwide.
“An Uncapped Voucher is exactly the same as our justSurf Uncapped accounts, but you can buy it from Pick n Pay and Engen Quickshops nationwide. It is different from our normal prepaid vouchers, in that it lasts till the end of the month – from date of activation,” Axxess states on their website.
Axxess explains that when you purchase an uncapped voucher on the 10th of the month and you activate it on the same day, the account will only remain active until the end of that month.
Axxess is well known for their per-GB ADSL vouchers, and the latest addition to their ‘physical’ prepaid ADSL vouchers may strengthen their already strong foothold in this market.
