MWEB uncapped ADSL: All the facts
MWEB shook up the South African broadband market in March this year when it launched affordable uncapped ADSL accounts.
These uncapped ADSL accounts enjoyed tremendous take up among existing MWEB subscribers and new MWEB customers, putting pressure on their competitors to also launch aggressively priced services.
To date the feedback from MWEB’s uncapped ADSL subscribers has been very positive, and unsurprisingly MWEB was awarded the ‘ISP of the Year’ and the ‘Broadband Maverick of the Year’ awards at the 2010 MyBroadband Conference.
Growing bandwidth demands
A capped broadband environment requires far less capacity than an uncapped environment, illustrated by the increased data usage on the MWEB network.
Before the launch of uncapped ADSL MWEB’s users consumed 282 Terabytes of data per month, but this figure has grown to 2 Petabytes of data per month.
Considering this massive growth in bandwidth consumption it is hardly surprising that MWEB has grown to become the biggest ADSL IPConnect capacity buyer in the country.
According to MWEB CEO Rudi Jansen’s presentation at the MyBroadband conference, MWEB’s Johannesburg IPC capacity is the largest in the country while its Cape Town IPC has the third largest capacity in the country.
MWEB’s combined IPC capacity is currently 70% larger than any other ISP in South Africa, which means that MWEB has surpassed Internet Solutions as the biggest IPC buyer in SA.
The higher IPC capacity however comes at a cost. Jansen showed that bandwidth on international cable systems like SEACOM, which runs for 13 000km, is cheaper than Telkom’s IPC capacity, which is providing local-only bandwidth.
The high cost of Telkom’s IPC service is essentially creating a pricing and bandwidth bottleneck in an ISPs ADSL network.
Other interesting facts
Jansen revealed other interesting facts about MWEB’s ADSL network and operations, including that:
- 200million emails are received into the network each month
- 80% of all emails are spam and is blocked
- MWEB’s email store holds 13.7 Petabytes of data
- MWEB has two 10 Gbps fibre rings with 9 core nodes
MWEB has evolved from a basic reseller of ADSL services at fairly high rates to a market leader in terms of uncapped ADSL offering in the local market.
This change in direction and strategy from MWEB is clearly visible in their network statistics, and Jensen pointed out that the growth and innovation is sure to continue in future.
