Telkom ADSL subscriber growth accelerating
Telkom launched its first ADSL services in late 2002, and by the end of March 2003 signed up 2669 ADSL subscribers. Since then the company has steadily grown its ADSL subscriber base with the introduction of more affordable offerings and boosting speeds along the way.
By the end of March 2010 Telkom had 647,462 ADSL subscribers, but despite the continued year-on-year growth it was not at the same level seen in 2007 and 2008. This can be attributed to both increased competition and the fact that Telkom’s ADSL prices remained unchanged since August 2007.
Telkom’s ADSL offerings are now facing even more competition with the launch of Cell C’s new 21 Mbps HSPA+ offerings which provide consumers with higher speeds and better value for money.
Vodacom, MTN and Neotel are also improving their broadband offerings with better out of bundle rates and improved entry-level packages.
MWEB has however blown new life into ADSL with the launch of its affordable uncapped ADSL ISP packages, making ADSL very attractive to high end broadband consumers.
Latest Telkom ADSL stats
Telkom today announced its financial results for the six months ended 30 September 2010, revealing that their ADSL growth has started accelerating again.
Over the last six months Telkom’s ADSL subscriber base grew to 699,368, with an average of 8,651 net ADSL additions per month. This is up from 647,462 ADSL subscribers six months ago and a 16% year-on-year ADSL subscriber growth.
“Telkom continues to aggressively promote its broadband packages through focusing our marketing efforts on particular customer groupings and the up-selling of the higher end broadband packages which offer substantial value. We have also put in maximum effort to promote entry-level ADSL packages with extremely competitive pricing,” Telkom said.
“We continue to make every effort to increase the bandwidth available to our customers.”
