IS ADSL network problems
Many online gamers using the IS network – hence ISPs like Afrihost and Openweb – have been experiencing high packet loss and poor latency.
One ADSL subscriber said that he has been experiencing high packet loss and high latency since the beginning of the year.
“This intermittent packet loss on the IS backbone is so bad that it sometimes drops most of my TCP connections like online games and SSH sessions. It has been going on for over a week now,” he says. “IS, fix your international upstream providers please!”
Numerous other IS ADSL subscribers confirmed the problems and voiced their frustration with the lack of support and clarity on this problem.
“I have been trying to get assistance from Afrihost for the last week with this issue, first I was told it is my ADSL line and then [proven] to them it was international bandwidth. I was then told on a daily basis it has been sorted out. I have complained on a daily basis and Afrihost does not seem to escalate it to IS,” said an Afrihost subscriber.
Complaints about this issue continued to come in today (Thursday, 13 January 2011), and one consumer posted the following message he received from IS on Thursday: “We are aware of the issues and I have received feedback from the team on your complaint. We have been able to replicate the issues that are being experienced and we are working at identifying a fix.”
When IS was contacted for official comment on Thursday morning, the company curiously said that “all issues in this regard were resolved yesterday.” Hence, Wednesday, 12 January 2011.
IS would not disclose the nature of the problems that they were experiencing and how these problems were resolved.
