MWEB Uncapped ADSL to be discontinued [April Fool]

MWEB surprised the ADSL ISP market in March 2010 when it launched affordable uncapped offerings starting from only R219 per month.

These uncapped ADSL offerings enjoyed tremendous support, with a large portion of MWEB’s capped ADSL subscribers migrating to uncapped solutions.

Many other ADSL providers joined the uncapped ADSL revolution with Afrihost, Axxess, Internet Solutions and Openweb launching their own affordable uncapped ADSL products.

MWEB has now informed their subscribers through an e-mail newsletter that they will be discontinuing their uncapped ADSL products and will be replacing them with high-usage capped accounts.

Existing MWEB uncapped ADSL customers will be migrated to the new high-end capped ADSL accounts free of charge, and monthly pricing will remain unchanged.

The new MWEB ADSL data bundles are as follows:

•    20GB account for R219 per month (replaces 384Kbps uncapped account)
•    30GB account for R299 per month (replaces 512Kbps uncapped account)
•    60GB account for R539 per month (replaces 4Mbps uncapped account)

MWEB explains

It is understood that an increase in international bandwidth costs has forced MWEB to reconsider its uncapped business model.

SEACOM’s instability over the last year meant that MWEB had to subsidise its SEACOM bandwidth with more expensive SAT-3 bandwidth for redundancy – a decision which essentially ‘broke’ MWEB’s uncapped ADSL business model.

MWEB has however informed their subscribers that they will honour all their long term ADSL contracts, and hence not migrate them to the new capped ADSL packages until their contracts expire.

MWEB’s uncapped ADSL business clients will not be affected by the decision.

MWEB CEO Rudi Jansen would not comment on the company’s plans, instead referring current MWEB uncapped ADSL subscribers to the company’s official message about the planned changes.
