1Mbps uncapped ADSL pricing: will ISPs match MWEB?

MWEB announced this week, on the 25th of May 2011, that they will upgrade their current 512Kbps uncapped ADSL subscribers to 1Mbps accounts at no additional charge.

MWEB CEO, Rudi Jansen, said the new 1Mbps rates will automatically take effect on 1 June 2011.

Existing and new subscribers will have the benefit of up to 1Mbps Uncapped ADSL at the following prices:

  1. Uncapped Data-only 1Mbps ADSL will retail for only R299 per month; and
  2. Uncapped All-inclusive 1Mbps ADSL (with ADSL line rental) will retail for R599 per month.

Since March 2010, when MWEB shook up the ADSL market with their affordable uncapped ADSL products, other ISPs have been playing catch-up.

These ADSL providers typically launched competing services soon after MWEB released their prices to market, but will the same happen this time around?

OpenWeb

Keoma Wright

Openweb founder Keoma Wright points out that they already offer a 1Mbps uncapped account at R359 per month, and hopes that with the assistance of their upstream provider Internet Solutions, they will be able to match or even better the MWEB price.

Afrihost

Afrihost’s Greg Payne said that they are currently looking into what they can offer subscribers, and “should know what we will be doing in the next few days”.

Axxess

Axxess has already responded to MWEB’s new 1Mbps uncapped ADSL pricing. “Effective immediately our 1Mbps uncapped ADSL product will cost R326 and the 512kbs justUncapped service will remain at R296,” said Axxess Marketing Director Franco Barbalich.

“Our clients can simply go into their control panel and upgrade themselves to 1024Kbs for R30. Simple and easy. They must however first check and confirm that Telkom have in fact upgraded their line to 1024Kbs.”

Vox Telecom

Clayton Timcke

Vox Telecom’s Clayton Timcke said that upgrading lines from 512Kbps to 1Mbps is a positive move for the ADSL market. “The market will continue to follow the trend of consumers getting more and more bang for their buck and, as usual, Vox will continue to challenge the status quo,” said Timcke.

Internet Solutions did not provide official feedback about their uncapped ADSL plans by the time of publication.
