All bank branches in South Africa where you can get your passport and smart ID

South African banks and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) are close to signing partnership agreements that will see more bank branches offer passport and smart ID services.

This will add to the 30 bank branches across South Africa that are already offering such services.

“The Banking Association of South Africa has confirmed to the department after many years of deliberations that the banks are now ready to sign the partnership agreements,” the DHA said

“The signing of the partnership agreement will, therefore, increase the footprint of bank branches that will be activated, as the agreement comes with infrastructure and human resources from the banks.”

The eHomeAffairs pilot launched in 2015 with several bank branches, allowing South Africans to apply for or renew a smart ID or passport without stepping into a Home Affairs office.

The pilot project was meant to last until March 2023, after which the number of participating branches would expand significantly.

However, this target was missed partly because banks raised concerns over Home Affairs system downtime, which they feared would damage their reputations.

The pilot has been extended twice, with the new end date being March 2024.

During the eight years since its launch, the system has received periodic upgrades, and millions have used it to apply for or renew their smart ID or passport.

MyBroadband tested the passport renewal service in April 2022, and despite some glitches on the eHomeAffairs platform, the experience was great.

We initially experienced problems receiving the one-time pin via SMS required to log in.

However, the process was relatively straightforward once we could log in. Users are prompted to create an application, with the option to apply for a passport, smart ID, or both.

The form then auto-fills a lot of the required information but requires you to input the following:

  • Country of citizenship
  • Birth town
  • Residential and postal address
  • The location at which you wish to have your biometrics captured and from which to collect your documents

In all, it took fifteen business days from the date of payment for the renewed passport to be ready for collection.

The total breakdown of 30 branches offering eHome Affairs services is as follows:

  • Standard Bank: 9
  • FNB: 7
  • Absa: 6
  • Nedbank: 6
  • Investec Bank: 1
  • Discovery Bank: 1
