Good news about R69 FNB licence disc renewals
FNB has extended the period for its promotional pricing for online licence disc renewals processed through its mobile app.
The bank launched the deal — discounted from R69 — in March 2024. It was initially set to last until 30 June 2024.
However, FNB has confirmed to MyBroadband that the promotion will remain in effect until December 2024.
Customers at the bank can renew their licence disc through the FNB Banking App after loading their car’s details onto the nav»Car platform.
Payment is made in-app, and customers can elect to use their bank account, credit card, or eBucks.
“This service from FNB is offered in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation, with no paperwork, if you are the registered owner of the vehicle,” said FNB.
It also rewards customers with R99 worth of eBucks per licence renewal if they are willing to accept a no-obligation car insurance quote from FNB Insurance.
The R69 fee only covers the service and delivery. Customers will be charged a vehicle licencing cost as per their vehicle’s weight and province of registration.
FNB adds that the R69 fee is per vehicle and not per basket, as with the National Traffic Information System’s (Natis) online service.
For example, motorists can renew licence disc for multiple vehicles on the Natis system and only pay the delivery fee.
FNB charges per vehicle and notes that the fee R69 fee is for customers who renew their licence disc before its expiry date.
Once this is done, the renewal process is seamless and requires no paperwork if you are the vehicle’s registered owner.
When FNB announced the promotion, nav CEO Jolandé Duvenage said the renewal service’s popularity had continued to grow.
Since March 2023, it has accumulated more than one million new vehicle uploads, of which 107,000 completed licence disc renewals through FNB.
Customers can also get free vehicle value estimates, pay traffic fines, and purchase comprehensive insurance and value-added products, including stretch and dent protection and extended warranties.
As the cut-off date of 30 June 2024 approached, FNB told MyBroadband that it was delighted with customers’ response after cutting the fee to R69 and would consider an extension.
“Our R69 licence renewal campaign provides a single price that covers both the service and delivery provided,” it said.
“We are evaluating whether to extend it further. While no final decision has been made yet, we will keep our customers and the media informed about any updates.”
It added that it offered a discounted rate to help South Africans with cost constraints that they may face. It made it the most affordable online licence disc renewal service in the country.
The table below compares online licence disc renewal prices from various providers.
Licence disc renewal service price comparison | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Provider | Availability | Service/admin fee | Delivery fee | Total |
FNB | Nationwide | Included | Included | R69.00 (promo) R99.00 (regular) |
National Traffic Information System (Natis) Online | Nationwide | Included | R99.00 | R99.00 |
South African Post Office (SapoMVL) | Nationwide | R72.00 | R75.00 | R147.00 |

Even without the price cut from R99 to R69, FNB’s service would still be on par with the next cheapest option, the Natis online service.
FNB’s R30 reduction from R99 followed a previous price cut from R199 to R99 in 2023.
The bank offers its licence disc renewal service in partnership with the Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Management Corporation.
The market just lost a major player, with PayCity shuttering its online licence disc renewal service on Sunday, 30 June 2024.
It sent a notice to customers informing them of its shutdown. It said all renewals paid for before 30 June will be processed, and the applicants will be able to track their renewal progress.
“PayCity is discontinuing our License Disc Renewal service on 30 June 2024,” it said. “We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your continued support.”
It said customer credit balances will remain valid and linked to their profiles. They can be used for other services on the platform, such as paying fines, prepaid utilities, and municipal accounts.
Alternatively, customers can contact the PayCity helpdesk at [email protected] to request a credit refund.
