TymeBank changes its name

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has given notice that TymeBank has officially changed its name to GoTyme Bank in South Africa.

TymeBank first revealed plans to change its name in October 2025. The SARB confirmed the change via a notice in the Government Gazette on Monday, 13 April 2026.

“The Financial Surveillance Department at the South African Reserve Bank hereby gives notice that the name of Tyme Bank Limited has changed to GoTyme Bank Limited,” the SARB said.

In October 2025, TymeBank’s corporate communications head, Pontsho Ramontsha, confirmed that the bank planned to change its name in the first half of 2026.

“We are in the process of evolving our brand to reflect our growth, maturity, and focus on customers across the economic spectrum,” she said.

“This brand elevation is still being finalised. Once all internal and regulatory processes are complete, we’ll share the full details.”

A purely digital bank, TymeBank launched in South Africa in February 2019. It has had an impressive run in terms of customer growth, and reached profitability in December 2023.

According to the bank, it was the first digital bank to break even in South Africa and on the African continent.

Former TymeBank CEO Conraad Jonker expressed his pride in the achievement, noting that globally, less than half of the top 100 digital banks were profitable.

“In fact, a recent study stated that less than 5% of all neobanks worldwide had reached profitability,” he said.

TymeBank reached 10 million customers in less than six years and has expanded into Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam, where it operates as “GoTyme”.

The group launched GoTyme in the Philippines in November 2022, and it had grown its customer base to 3.6 million within just 18 months.

The bank recently announced plans to roll out “dedicated consumer hubs” in South African malls, while removing its kiosks from Pick n Pay stores.
