Standard Bank customers have taken to Twitter and Facebook to complain about problems that appear to be affecting ATM and Internet transactions, and card payments.
Individual and business users alike are complaining about outages, with Lynette McDonald saying on the bank’s Facebook wall that every Standard Bank ATM in Somerset West is not working.
Charmaine Uys, also posting on Standard Bank’s wall, said that she was unable to use her electronic credit card machines to accept payments from customers.
Another user, Jacques Potgieter, pulled no punches with his comment.
“I have never been exposed to such useless, finger up your nose impotence as I have been in the last few days of being with this bank! I can’t with any level of confidence access my money, can’t ask questions about my account online,” he wrote. “This is the third major faux pas from this organisation in the past month that has seen me have my medical aid suspended, embarrassed at till points and just generally not be able to plan my finances.”
Responding to frustrated users online, Standard Bank said that it is “experiencing intermittent system issues.” The bank said that it is working on resolving the issue as soon as possible.
“Our technicians are working on it,” Standard Bank said, apologising for the inconvenience caused.
Update: Standard Bank have provided MyBroadband with a statement saying that it has identified and resolved the problem as of 15:30 on Monday, 27 January 2014.
The full statement follows:
Standard Bank would like to apologise to customers who were impacted by service disruptions to parts of the Standard Bank network today and over the course of the weekend. Standard Bank has experienced unexpected intermittent service disruptions particularly at some ATM’s and points of sale devices. While not all of our customers or channels were impacted by this disruption, we acknowledge the impact of this and apologises to all our affected customers.
Due to the disruptions experienced, some customers were not able to conduct normal banking services. Standard Bank identified the cause and ensured that full services were restored by 15:30 today and are currently under active monitoring.
Our dedicated IT team are monitoring the situation and we will provide regular updates should the situation change.
