Black Friday 2019 is here, and many South African online and brick-and-mortar retailers are offering big discounts on a wide variety of products this year (see all Black Friday coverage here).
Black Friday is a United States tradition and signals the start of the Christmas shopping season. It always takes place on the first Friday after Thanksgiving, which is 29 November this year.
South Africa has adopted this tradition and Black Friday has grown in popularity so rapidly that it is now the biggest online shopping day of the year.
While Black Friday used to be focused on online shopping in South Africa, large retailers like Pick n Pay and Checkers have also embraced it in recent years.
Most South African stores are running multi-day Black Friday specials, starting at 00:01 on 29 November until the end of Monday 2 December.
Prominent stores giving big discounts
This year, many South African retailers and telecommunications companies are running Black Friday specials.
Samsung will be offering excellent discounts on televisions, aircons, smartphones, and other tech products.
South African consumers can also expect to save on Vodacom’s Video Play streaming service with a special Black Friday offer.
Takealot will run South Africa’s biggest Black Friday sale – better known as its Blue Dot sale – which will start on 29 November and end on 3 December.
Throughout this period, Takealot will offer big discounts on technology products, TVs, appliances, toys, and gaming products.
