Expect big Black Friday deals on South African super apps

Super apps are extremely popular and are used by thousands of South Africans daily.
A super app is an app that offers a wide range of services — such as buying products, booking tickets, and paying bills — within a single interface.
Examples of popular South African super apps include Vodacom’s VodaPay and Nedbank’s Avo, and we asked these two companies about the benefits of shopping on a super app this Black Friday.
Easy access
“Shopping on a super app like VodaPay offers customers the convenience of a one-stop digital mall with a portfolio of products, services and solutions to cater for our customers’ diverse lifestyle needs,” said Vodacom.
For example, in the case of VodaPay, it has partnered with businesses like FlightSite, Hirsch’s, QuickBus, Koodoo, and OneDayOnly. Similarly, Avo has partners like Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem, and Makro.
Both apps let you shop for deals from these and many other retail partners through a single app and using a single cart — maximising convenience and helping users find the best deals.
Therefore, it could be said that super apps are the next evolution of e-commerce — combining many online stores into a single, accessible platform.
Avoiding physical stores
Nedbank also emphasised that online shopping is far superior to visiting physical stores during high-traffic periods like Black Friday.
“There is a time and a place for traditional shopping, and Black Friday is not it,” said Nedbank.
“Why go through the trouble of getting in your car and using your hard-earned fuel just to run around to different stores and fight to find the bargains?”
Vodacom agreed, highlighting that super apps make Black Friday deals “accessible at the customers’ fingertips.”
Exclusive deals
To promote the use of their super apps, companies run their own special deals for Black Friday that are unavailable through other channels.
For example, Vodacom said customers are receiving “app-only offers with substantial discounts” — such as 30% more airtime when recharging — through Vodapay during Black November.
Nedbank is also running a wide range of Black Friday deals on Avo, as well as a competition where anyone who buys products from Avo’s “Best of Black Friday” deals page can win a backup power solution worth up to R13,000.
Therefore, by shopping with a super app, it is possible to “double up” on your deals — getting great Black Friday specials from retailers and the bonus value from the super app itself.
