MTN reveals Black Friday 2024 plans

Black Friday 2024 is just over a month away, and while MTN isn’t ready to announce its deals yet, the mobile network operator told MyBroadband that it plans to offer deals on devices, data, and voice plans.

The annual sales event will take place on 29 November 2024, and MyBroadband asked mobile operators Cell C, MTN, Telkom, and Vodacom about their plans for Black Friday this year.

MTN South Africa said it plans to hold an extended Black Friday promotion in 2024. It told MyBroadband that its deals will be available for longer than just the weekend of the sales event.

“MTN can confirm that it will be participating in this year’s Black Friday promotion. Our customers can anticipate great deals and value on selected price plans, devices, data and voice,” it said.

It added that it will soon communicate further details, including deals and promotions surrounding Black Friday.

In 2023, MTN’s Black Friday deals ran from 17 November to 4 December and included discounts on mobile and home Internet packages, prepaid devices, and contracts.

The mobile operator also offered free Disney+ Mobile or standard Disney+ subscriptions with all its Black Friday deals.

For example, prepaid customers could buy the Samsung Galaxy A24 LTE with a R1,000 discount. The deal included three months of Disney+ mobile, valued at R150, and a once-off 5G data bundle valid for two weeks.

It also offered various deals on smartphone contracts and bundles, which came bundled with a six-month Disney+ Mobile subscription. The deals were also available to customers who wanted to upgrade their contracts.

Lastly, the mobile operator offered a six-month standard Disney+ subscription, worth R800, with its MyMTN Home Internet 10Mbps fixed-4G package.

Big spenders on Black Friday 2023

Several shoppers in South Africa spent hundreds of thousands of rands during Black Friday promotions last year, with one spending R1.16 million.

Some of South Africa’s major banks and payment gateways shared data on spending habits during Black Friday after the sales event concluded.

According to Absa’s data, the individual spent R1.16 million did it across multiple transactions while purchasing groceries.

The bank revealed that another customer spent R1 million through a single transaction on furniture purchases. The highest volume of transactions by one Absa customer was 644.

It is important to note that there might be some overlap in the data. For example, the 644 transactions by one Absa customer may have been processed through BankServAfrica, which also recorded 644 transactions as the highest volume by one customer.

Standard Bank also revealed that some of its customers were big spenders during Black Friday 2023, with one spending R1 million during the sales event. However, the nature of their purchase was unclear.

Another Standard Bank customer spent R900,000 in a single transaction, while the highest number of transactions processed by one customer was 148.

Ozow recorded the third-highest total spent at R818,000, which also happened to be its highest spend through a single transaction. One Ozow customer processed 94 transactions during the sales period.

The table below summarises the highest total spend, highest spend in one transaction, and highest volume of transactions by one customer across various banks and payment gateways during Black Friday 2023.
