South African broadband speeds: 2008 to 2014

Ookla’s latest Net Index statistics reveal that South Africa’s average download speed increased from 1,101kbps on 1 January 2008 to 5,616kbps on 9 June 2014.
The statistics further showed that the average upload speed in the country increased from 266kbps in January 2008 to 2,658kbps in June 2014.
Ookla’s Net Index website uses data from millions of Internet speed tests performed on the Speedtest.net platform.
Over the last six years South Africans performed 468 million speed tests using the Speedtest.net service.
The number of daily South African speed tests increased from 9,840 on 1 January 2008, to 333,415 on 9 June 2014.
