Suburbs with the highest broadband speeds in South Africa

Ookla’s Net Index website, which uses data from test results from Ookla’s platform, shows that Sandton is the top broadband suburb in South Africa with an average speed of 22Mbps.

According to Ookla’s Net Index statistics, which are based on millions of broadband speed tests, South Africa has an average fixed broadband download speed of 6.3Mbps and an average upload speed of 2.8Mbps.

South Africa’s fixed broadband speeds remain significantly lower than the global average – a download speed of 21.3Mbps and upload speed of 9.8Mbps.

South Africa’s mobile broadband performance compares far more favourably with global standards, as illustrated in the table below.

The Net Index statistics show that Sandton is the top fixed broadband suburb with an average download speed of over 22Mbps.

Sandton is also the area with the highest average mobile broadband speed at 13.48Mbps.

Looking at the four major cities, Johannesburg had the highest average speed with 7.04Mbps, followed by Pretoria on 6.58Mbps, Cape Town on 5.98Mbps, and Durban with 4.89Mbps.
