Free video on demand on free Wi-Fi in South Africa

Project Isizwe recently announced a free video on demand (VOD) service, called “WiFi TV”, for the free Wi-Fi network it operates in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
The first offering on the new VOD service is “Connect Up Tshwane”, which Project Isizwe said is a “bouquet of content produced by young people within the Tshwane communities, about and for the people of Tshwane.”
Content is split into four main areas, corresponding to areas within the municipality where Project Isizwe has already rolled out Wi-Fi coverage.
These are: Mamelodi (Mams), Soshanguve (Sosh), Atteridgeville (Attville), and Pretoria central (CBD).
The Mams, Sosh, Attvile, and CBD channels will produce content curated around 8 themes:
- Mo Styleng: Fashion and style; looks, tips, opinions.
- Talente Ya Gao: A showcase of talent within Tshwane, including musicians, poets, performers, and artists of all kinds.
- Kasi Guide: Reviews of restaurants, venues, events; all local Kasi business; and a look at landmarks and ways of getting around.
- Sport: Coverage of local sports; profiles of clubs, venues, and players; and the latest results.
- Dintshang: Current affairs – what’s on the minds of the people of Tshwane.
- Tumelo: Faith and religion; sermons and gospel choirs; and the resources and facilities the places of worship offer the communities.
- Tuto: Informative and educational content from entrepreneurship to DIY.
- Bana: Content for kids; stories, games, and crafts.
Connect Up Tshwane runs on a platform called Pockit TV, which is operated by a South African live streaming and VOD company called Sstreamm.
