Vodacom upgrades customers to 14.4 Mbps
In February this year Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys announced that Vodacom will upgrade all their data customers to 7.2 Mbps at the end of March. Previously only Broadband Advanced subscribers had access to this speed.
Vodacom yesterday confirmed that all its customers – contract, top-up and prepaid – have in fact been provisioned for access to 14.4 Mbps.
“Customers who use a 14.4 Mbps-capable device and who are within a 14.4 Mbps coverage area have access to 14.4 Mbps HSDPA,” said Nicolene Visser, Vodacom’s Executive Head of Corporate Communications.
Visser however points out that the company’s Broadband Advanced package, which previously had the benefit of higher speeds to subscribers, will not fall away.
“This package [Broadband Advanced] is still available – customers who subscribe to this data option benefit from paying the same in-bundle and out-of-bundle data rates in accordance with the data package option they subscribe to – a very convenient option for high data users,” said Visser.
Uys previously said that Vodacom plans to have the full Vodacom network 14.4 Mbps enabled for the World Cup.
The Vodacom CEO added that around 100 sites will be 14.4 Mbps enabled by the end of March, but highlighted that transmission capacity remains a significant challenge in the rollout of these higher speeds.
