Telkom LTE-Advanced network expanding to 22 new suburbs

Telkom has expanded its LTE Advanced (LTE-A) network to an additional 22 suburbs across South Africa, the company announced on 19 May.
The LTE-A expansion will cover areas in greater Johannesburg, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Tshwane.
LTE-A is an enhancement of the Long Term Evolution standard which can theoretically support peak speeds of up to 1Gbps while the access device is stationary.
Telkom first unveiled its LTE-A network – which runs on the company’s 2.3GHz spectrum – at the MyBroadband Conference in October 2014, where it demonstrated peak speeds of over 380Mbps.
“Telkom is on a journey to deliver super-fast broadband on both wireless and fixed lines to cater for the specific needs and requirements of our customers,” said Attila Vitai, managing director of Telkom’s mobile and consumer arms.
Telkom said speeds on its LTE-A network are comparable to speeds available over a fibre network, and offer an alternative to fixed-line broadband for high-speed connectivity.
It also said it is one of the earliest adopters of the LTE-A technology in the world, and that the size of Telkom’s LTE-A network is unrivaled in Africa.
