New Telkom mobile prepaid data vs Vodacom, MTN, Cell C

Mobile network operators

Telkom recently published new prepaid mobile data prices on its website.

The operator’s new bundles will provide users with coverage on both Telkom and MTN’s networks, and no longer list an option to buy “Telkom only” data.

Out-of-bundles costs are set to 29c per MB for all packages, with bundle validity based on size.

The 50GB bundle is valid for 12 months, the 20GB six months, and all other bundles two months (expire at end of following calendar month after activation).

Telkom’s new pricing drew criticism from users, who felt the bundle options are not a good deal. With this in mind, we compared Telkom’s data pricing to that of Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C – as detailed in the table below.

25MB R7.25 R12 (30MB) R12 (20MB) R6

250MB R39 R59 R85 (300MB) R55 (300MB)
500MB R69 R99 R105 R85

2GB R139 R249 R260 R245
3GB R199 R299 R330 R299

10GB R499 R599 R650 R549
20GB R899 R999 R1,250 R1,099
50GB R1,799

It should be noted that MTN’s bundles fall under its Da-Taaa promotion, which gives users free bonus data. Purchasing a 1GB bundle, for example, gives users an additional 1GB of free data – valid for 30 days.

The promotion is set to continue until 31 July 2015.
