Free Gigs on offer

The battle for broadband subscribers is intensifying, and consumers have the luxury of selecting the juiciest deal from competing broadband offerings.

The ADSL ISP market is particularly competitive, and here savvy shoppers can score free bandwidth if they shop around.

FNB Connect has for some time already offered new and existing FNB customers a ‘free top up’ when signing up to the service.  “Sign up for Connect Talk and get a R10 FREE top up to your account or sign up for Connect Surf and get 1Gigabyte of data topped up to your account for FREE,” the FNB promotional material reads.

FNB is however not the only company giving away free bandwidth.  CNA’s Starcraft II promotion saw the company offering 3 GBs of free data with every game purchased, a very handy bundle for avid gamers.  Vodacom has also discovered the consumer penchant for free stuff and they are giving their Broadband Advanced subscribers 1 GB of ‘midnight’ bandwidth free with every GB purchased.

But the action is not all with the companies with the big marketing budgets, ISPs like Cybersmart are offering ADSL access at slightly discounted rates than what consumers pay Telkom, but they are throwing in free data bundles – ranging between 1 GB and 3 GB depending on line speed – free of charge.

Web Africa on the other hand is throwing in a free gigabyte to sweeten the deal for ADSL subscribers who migrate their ADSL line to them.

Telkom, the incumbent operator, is even getting in on the act by bumping up their 3 GB ADSL data bundles to 5 GB and increasing their 5 GB bundles to 9 GB free of charge.

The biggest deal of them all may however come from Cell C, if recent speculation about its mobile broadband promotion is to be believed.  According to documentation provided to MyBroadband the company is planning two broadband offerings:  Broadband Standard and Broadband advanced.

According to the document the Broadband Basic product will offer subscribers a Cell C branded 7.2 Mbps dongle, a prepaid SIM and 2 GB of data per month for a period of 12 months for R999 – once off.

The Broadband Advanced product will offer subscribers a Cell C branded 21 Mbps dongle, a prepaid SIM and 5 GB of data per month for a period of 12 months for R1999 – once off.
