Neotel network problems explained

Numerous Neotel customers reported network and connectivity problems over the weekend which reportedly started shortly after midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning.  Neotel’s helpdesk confirmed the country-wide problems, but could not provide details about the problems at the time.

The weekend’s network issues also affected at least one Cape Town based service provider which reported that they experienced downtime of their SEACOM bandwidth for a few hours on Sunday morning.

SEACOM said on Sunday that they did not experience any problems on their network, and both Neotel and Johannesburg based SEACOM customers confirmed that they did not experience any international bandwidth problems.

Neotel explains

Neotel confirmed the network problems, explaining that the downtime was caused by ‘power system and router faults’.  Neotel also said that they were aware of issues at their Cape Town POP on Sunday.

“Neotel apologises for a network fault affecting Internet access for its wireless subscribers between 5 am and 1 pm on Saturday 14 August 2010. Voice services and all optical fibre services were not affected,” Neotel said.

“Power system and router faults occurred on two separate firewalls resulting in wireless subscribers in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth being unable to log in or connect to the Internet.”

Neotel added that they are committed to ensuring high service availability for all it subscribers, and continues to invest in infrastructure and expertise to minimise the occurrence and duration of network faults.

“Neotel’s national and international Tier 1 Internet infrastructure operates at very high availability, witnessed by the fact that Neotel’s Internet services were unaffected by the recent six day SEACOM outage. Following the recent commissioning of the EASSy submarine cable, Neotel will be adding this route to further increase performance,” Neotel said.
