Premier David Makhura said in his 2016 State of the Province Address that Gauteng will reach its goal of 100% broadband connectivity by 2019.
This follows a press statement in July 2014 by the Gauteng Economic Cluster that its vision for a Digital City-Region is widespread broadband connectivity and 100% Wi-Fi provision.
“Broadband connectivity is growing faster, covering all parts of the City Region,” said Makhura.
“Through our partnerships with the municipalities and the private sector, we will reach our goal of 100% connectivity by 2019.”
He said the provincial government had connected 10 core network sites and 368 local sites that are fully operational – out of a target of 400 for 2015/16.
“In addition, the City of Tshwane has connected 700 free Wi-Fi hotspots, Johannesburg 408 free Wi-Fi hotspots, and Ekurhuleni 408 free Wi-Fi hotspots.”
