Top broadband speeds in South Africa

Ookla’s Speedtest.net servers are the premier destination for consumers to test their broadband speeds, and with the company’s Net Index is it easy to see the average Internet speeds in the country.

According to the latest Ookla Net Index, South Africa has an average download speed of 2.74 Mbps and an average uplink speed of 1.06 Mbps.

The Ookla Net Index results are based on 164,970 broadband speed tests conducted between May 1, 2011 and May 30, 2011.

According to Ookla’s Net Index the fastest network in the country is ‘Uninet Project’ with an average download speed of 19.10 Mbps, followed by Comtel Communications at 6.06 Mbps and Verizon South Africa at 5.55 Mbps.

Refining results

The Ookla Net Index results provide a summary of the average speeds for all networks identified via IP address, a logical choice for a global broadband speed test provider such as Ookla.

However, some local stakeholders have complained that the results do not provide them with details about the broadband connections used when conducting tests, and potentially skewed results because of tests conducted from ISP core networks.

MyBroadband has now launched a custom Ookla Speed Test which includes connection types and filters results, limiting the results to show only South Africa’s most popular broadband connections.

MyBroadband’s results further filter speed tests according to local and international speeds – an important component to broadband consumers.

Results so far

Based on a few hundred MyBroadband speed tests so far, the average local download speed is 2.43 Mbps, while the average international download speed is 2.08Mbps.

ADSL 10Mbps connections currently reign supreme in the download department, while there is a mixture between mobile broadband connections and 10 Mbps ADSL connections when it comes to the top upload speeds.
