Teraco data centre plans

Data centre provider Teraco has previously announced their plans for a new data centre in Durban as well as a new phase to their data centre (DC) in Johannesburg.

Teraco has a number of projects running concurrently in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town to extend their capacity. The company allows their clients to host server equipment from any vendor they wish.

Head of operations of Teraco, Gys Geyser, confirmed that all the major fibre, undersea and internet service providers have points of presence at Teraco’s data centres.

Lex van Wyk, managing director of Teraco, further confirmed that they have received commitment from four of the “big guys” already, with the view that all the major providers would be represented in the Durban data centre.

Van Wyk revealed that the launch of the centre in Durban has been delayed by two weeks to launch in mid-August, with the recent poor weather conditions cited as the reason.

The Durban DC will start with 600 square metres of space with which demand will be gauged, van Wyk said, and will be followed by an expansion of 300 square metres should the need be there.

In Cape Town, Teraco is finalising agreements with their landlord for another 2,000 square metres of total space, which they hope to open in 2012.

Van Wyk said that the total amount of data centre space, or white space, for their expansion project in Cape Town will be 1,200 square metres with a first phase of 600 square metres.

In Johannesburg Teraco is looking forward to the launch of Phase 3 of their Isando DC launch on Monday, 1 August 2011, which will add 500 square metres of white space. Seacom will also be demonstrating 100G (100 gigabits per second per wavelength) technology at the Isando DC next week.
