Prepaid data pricing: How good is 8ta’s deal?

Following the launch of 8ta’s 10GB for R199 post-paid data bundle promotion, the operator has now launched another special aimed at prepaid users.

8.ta is offering a ‘2GB + 1GB’ prepaid data bundle promotion at R149, which consists of 2GB anytime data and 1GB Midnight Surfer data for use between 12am and 5am. This promotion reduces the per-MB rate for prepaid data to as low as 5c per MB.

Managing Executive of Telkom Mobile, Amith Maharaj, said 8.ta has responded to the need for an aggressively priced prepaid data bundle.

“This offer gives users the freedom to purchase an economically priced data bundle as and when needed, with no contract commitments or large upfront payments. It also provides contract subscribers from all networks with the ability to top up their data usage for the remainder of the month,” said Maharaj.

How does it compare?

With so many different data promotions in South Africa it can be challenging to establish if this deal is indeed as good as Maharaj claims it is. A simple table with similar prepaid data bundles from competitors answers this question.

Prepaid data bundles
Provider Standard Data (MB) OOB Rate
In Bundle Rate
8ta 2048 R1.00 R0.07 R149
Cell C 3072 R0.13 R0.13 R400
Vodacom 2300 R1.00 R0.17 R389
MTN 2048 R0.19 R0.19 R389

It is well known that Vodacom is set to unveil their new prepaid data pricing soon, but it is expected to be in line with their recently announced Broadband Standard contract prices, and therefore still far more expensive than 8ta’s promotional offer.
