Cell C remains committed to consumer market

Cell C said that it remains committed to the consumer market and believes that there are still lots of opportunities in this market. This is according to Bjorn Flormann, Cell C’s chief commercial officer.

These comments came after Michael Ansley, a fixed contractor whose contract expired at the end of January 2012, said in an interview that Cell C is moving away from the consumer data market because this market segment is saturated.

Michael Ansley, which in an interview with Pyramid’s Badii Kechiche was introduced as the executive head of business partners at Cell C, said that their recent focus was on data and that they made a “really big jump in garnering a few hundred thousand customers on the back of their 3G network rollout.”

“The first push which really changed the game in the mobile data market in South Africa is the prepaid data stick which we launched in 2010. The price per Meg was significantly lower than any of our competitors.”

“Clearly as we go on into 2012 the game changes. Our competitors have caught up from a pricing perspective, and the data market is saturated in the mobile data player space.”

Ansley said that Cell C will make a significant shift to compete for the business market and possibly the government market.

“The game will be played in the SME space from Cell C’s perspective,” said Ansley. “The build out of the IT infrastructure and the network supports our move into the SME space with a variety of different services to be bundled out in 2012.”

Flormann however explained that the consumer segment in South Africa is in no way saturated and Cell C continues to be committed to the individual consumer.

“As with any business, Cell C is continuously looking at ways to expand its current product portfolio to ensure the needs of all customer segments are met,” said Flormann.
