80Mbps broadband access on Telkom’s roadmap?

Telkom is introducing MSAN (Multi-Services Access Node) technologies into their network, bringing fibre closer to their customers and making access speeds of up to 80Mbps possible.

According to a well placed source, Telkom is investing billions into shortening the local loop by introducing MSANs (Multi-Services Access Nodes) into their network.  This project will enable broadband services of up to 80Mbps using last mile technologies like VDSL.

These high broadband speeds will make it possible to support multiple high bandwidth services like high definition TV streaming, video on demand and broadband Internet access over a single connection.

It is understood that the MSAN pilot project will be commissioned soon, and that Huawei and Alcatel have been contracted to supply equipment and build the network.

In November 2011 Telkom officially announced that the company will launch 40Mbps broadband services by 2015 and increase the speed of their entry-level services to 2Mbps.

Telkom said that they will focus on offering targeted double & triple play offerings with on-demand media-rich content and converged services.

Telkom also acknowledged that the broadband market is dominated by mobile players largely as a result of their slow time to install and undifferentiated product offerings.

“This is as a result of network and technology constraints,” Telkom said. “These issues are being dealt with and we are focusing our efforts on delivering consistent, best in class customer experience and improving current customer satisfaction. We will also simplify and streamline our product offerings and communication.”

Telkom could not immediately comment on their MSAN and broadband plans.
